Saving Lives through Swim Lessons
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, every day ten people die from unintentional drowning*. Our region has suffered several deaths of children due to drowning - this has to stop. The YMCA, and Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, are taking a stand!
Thanks to the generous support of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, the Wapakoneta Family YMCA is excited to offer an anti-drowning program geared towards third graders at Wapakoneta Elementary School, Cridersville Elementary School and Waynesfield-Goshen Elementary School. Below are the details of the program and some FAQs:
3rd graders at Wapakoneta City School and Waynesfield-Goshen School Districts. Right now these are the only grades and schools we are focusing on for the 2016-2017 school year. As we get more comfortable with our curriculum, and program, we may expand.
Students in the 3rd grade at the above school districts can come into the YMCA and sign up for a free membership. While we hope they sign up for swim lessons, the membership can be used for any program.
The lessons follow our regular session dates. Classes are on Tuesdays.

Come into the YMCA and the staff will sign you up.
I already have a Y membership, what happens now?
Awesome! Swim lessons are free for all members of the YMCA. Please sign your child(ren) up for any Third Grade Swim Lesson or other regular group swim lesson.
My child goes to a different school district or is in another grade, am I still eligible?
Unfortunately, the program is only valid at Wapak, Cridersville and Waynesfield-Goshen Elementary Schools. It is also only eligible for 3rd graders. Look for updates in the future.
Can I transfer this to another family or child outside the school districts?
This program is only for 3rd graders at Wapak, Cridersville or Waynesfield-Goshen Elementary Schools. While we understand there is great need for swimming lessons, the perimeters of our program and grant are very specific and are limited to these schools and grade; therefore the membership can not be transferred. A reminder that swim lessons are free with a Wapakoneta Family YMCA membership, and we offer financial assistance for those that qualify.
Is this a full facility membership for my third grader? Can I add my family?
Yes and yes! The YMCA allows a child to be alone at the YMCA starting at age 8. This is a full facility membership and the membership has the same privileges as any other member.
Yes, you may upgrade this membership and add your family - and we will even waive the joiner fee! Stop by the YMCA, or call, for details and pricing (419-739-9622).
I already have a family membership, can I get a refund for my third grader?
This program is grant funded for one school year and there is no guarantee that it will be renewed. At this time we will not be offering refunds. If your child has a student membership, you can cancel that membership (provided you have fulfilled your contract) and use this one.
When does this membership expire?
August 1, 2017.
How do I know what level of lessons to put my child in?
The YMCA staff will help you - give us a call - 419-739-9622 or email@example.com. Children in the lessons will be broken into smaller groups by skill level.
I can't afford a Y membership.
The YMCA does not turn anyone away for an inability to pay. We offer financial assistance to those that qualify. To get more information and to download an application, click here.
I still have more questions, who do I call?
Please call the YMCA at 419-739-9622 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
